Skating Academy Class Description

Tots

The Tot levels are designed to help the preschool-age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice.

Tot 1&2 (Ages 3-5)

Sit and stand up – on Ice / March forward – 8–10 steps / March, then glide on two feet / Dip while moving /Backward wiggles/ Forward Swizzles 

Tot 3&4 (Ages 3-5)

Forward skating – 8–10 steps / Forward one-foot glide – R and L / Backward swizzles – 2–3 in a row/ Forward snowplow stop/ Two-foot turns from forward to back, in place (both directions)/Two-foot hop, in place.


Hockey Tot (Ages 3-6)


Develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Basic foundation of skating and edge work will be taught in this class. No sticks or pucks will be used.  Hockey helmet is required.


Mommy/Daddy & Me (Ages 3-5)

This class offers an opportunity for parents to skate with their pre-school children, ages 3 to 5 years. You will be able to spend quality time with your child while he/she learns the fundamentals of skating

Basic Skills

The “basic skills” are the fundamentals of the sport. These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and Mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1-8 levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating.

Basic 1 

Sit on ice and stand up / March forward across the ice /Forward two-foot glide / Dip /Forward swizzles – 6 –8 in a row / Backward swizzles – 6–8 in a row / Beginning Snowplow stop.


Hockey Fundamentals (Ages 7-12)

 

Develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Basic foundation of skating and edge work will be taught in this class. No sticks or pucks will be used.  Hockey helmet is required.


Basic 2 

Forward one foot glides – R and L / Backward two-foot glide / Backward swizzles 6–8 in a row /Two-foot turn back/front stand still / Moving snowplow stop.


Basic 3

Forward stroking, (Correct use of blade) /Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle R and L/ Moving forward to backward two-foot turn – R and L / Backward one-foot glides – R and L / Forward slalom.


Basic 4   

Forward outside edge on a circle – R and L /Forward inside edge on a circle – R and L / Forward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise / Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise / Back one foot glides R and L / Beginning two foot spin.


Basic 5

Backward outside edge on a circle – R and L / Backward inside edge on a circle – R and L / Backward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise/ Forward outside three-turn R and L / Hockey stop (both directions)/ Advanced two foot spin(4-6 revs).

Basic 6 

Forward inside three-turn – R and L / Backward stroking/ Beginning one-foot spin (2-4 revs)/ T-stops R and L/ Bunny Hop/ Forward spiral on a straight line R and L.


Basic 7/8 (Pre- Free skate)

Forward inside open Mohawk R-L and L-R/ Back Crossovers to back outside edge glides (landing/both directions)/ Back outside edge to a forward outside edge/ Mohawk Combination step (both directions)/ One-foot upright spin/ Mazurka R and L/ Waltz jump.

Supplemental Specialty Classes

These classes take your skating to the next level and will contribute to the training of the complete figure skater.


Artistry in Motion

Skaters will learn the basic principles and philosophy of choreography and style. This class will give them a foundation in basic body alignment, movement and line.

Power Skating 

Skaters will utilize posture, body alignment, and proper skating technique while building endurance.  .  

Power Skating (Pre-Free skate – Free skate 6)

Infinite Edges

Skaters will learn to use deep edges and turns while skating in precision with each other in an effortless manner.

Low Edge Class (Free skate 1-3)

High Edge Class (Passed Free skate 4-6)


Spin to Win

Skaters will develop correct technique and position in spins and spin combinations, as well as developing speed and originality.

Intro to Spins (Basic Skills-Freeskate 3)

Jump Excellence

Classes that focusing on the technique and development of height, speed and quickness in jumps.

Combination Jumps (Free skate 1-6)

Free skate 1-6  Jumps & Spins

The Free Skate levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills. This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating. All skaters enrolled in a Freeskate class must also be enrolled in a supplemental class on the same day. To succeed at this level a minimum of 1 hour of lesson time is needed.

Free skate 1  

Forward power stroking / Basic forward outside and inside consecutive edges / Back outside three-turns R and L/ Upright spin, entry from back crossovers (min. 6 revs) / half flip/ Toe loop.


Free skate 2   

Alternating forward outside and inside spirals/ Basic backward outside and inside consecutive edges/ Backward inside three-turns R and L/ Beginning back spin (up to 2 revs)/ Half Lutz/ Salchow.


Free skate 3  

Alternating back crossovers to back outside edges (4 step) / Altering Mohawk/crossover sequence R-L & L- R / Waltz three-turns / Advanced backspin (free foot in crossed leg position, min 3 revs) / Loop jump / Waltz-toe loop or Salchow-toe loop combination.


Free skate 4

Forward power three-turns R and L (3 sets each) / Waltz eight (clockwise and counter clockwise) / Forward upright spin to back upright spin (3 revs each) / Sit spin (min 3 revs) / Half loop / Flip.


Free skate 5

Backward outside three-turn, Mohawk into backward crossovers – clockwise and counterclockwise / Five-step Mohawk sequence (clockwise and counter clockwise) / Camel spin (min 3 revs) / Waltz-loop jump combination / Lutz.


Free skate 6

Forward power pulls R and L / Creative step sequence (variety of three-turns, Mohawks, & toe steps) / Camel-sit spin combination (min 2 revs each position) / Layback or attitude spin or cross foot spin (3 revs) / Waltz- half loop-Salchow jump sequence, Axel.


Adult Skating

The Adult curriculum is designed for the beginner adult skater. It will promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. Adult skaters will progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated. This is an exciting new program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Coffee Club

Special Class just for Adults that includes child care for the 30 min lesson and an extra 30 min of practice time on the public session. Adults will work at their own pace and also receive a discount on Coffee at the Cafe'.

Adult 2

Adult 3

Forward outside and inside edges on a circle / Forward crossovers / Backward 1-foot glide, right and left, one time  skater’s height /Backward snowplow stop / Backward 1/2 swizzle pumps on a circle /Moving forward to backward and backward to forward two-foot turn /Beginning 2-foot spin crossovers with two-foot transition / Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glide (landing position) /Lunge /Spiral /Bunny Hop / Footwork sequence: (3-5 forward crossovers to an inside Mohawk, 3-5 backward crossovers, step forward inside the circle)


Adult 4

Basic forward outside and forward inside consecutive edges / Backward edges on a circle /Backward crossovers, / Backward chasses on a circle / Forward outside 3-turns, right and left F. Forward outside swing rolls to a count of 6 / Forward inside pivots, R & L / Backward crossover to landing position


Adult 5

Forward and Backward Crossovers in a  Figure 8 pattern /Forward outside to inside change of edge on a line / T-stop, right or left / Forward inside 3-turns, R&L / Continuous forward progressive chasse sequence, (clockwise and counterclockwise) / Beginning one foot spin


Adult 6

Forward inside OPEN mohawk, both directions / Forward Perimeter Stroking with crossover end patterns / Alternating backward crossovers with two-foot transition / Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glide (landing position) / Lunge /Spiral / Bunny Hop / Footwork sequence: (3-5 forward crossovers to an inside Mohawk, 3-5 backward crossovers, step forward inside the circle)
